Waterford Greenway follows a former railway between Waterford and Dungarvan in south-east Ireland. The approximately 46 km route passes through Kilmacthomas, combining railway structures with views of the Suir and Dungarvan Bay.

Railway heritage and the city link

Viaducts and Ballyvoyle Tunnel are distinctive features of the route. The brick-lined tunnel, built in the 1870s, extends for almost 400 metres.

A 2.1 km shared cycling and walking link opened in June 2023 between the Bilberry car park and Waterford’s Clock Tower. It follows Bilberry Road, Grattan Quay and Merchants Quay, connecting the greenway with the city centre.

Nature along the greenway

The council’s Biodiversity on the Greenway StoryMap explores Carriganore, Mount Congreve and Durrow. Interactive mapping and species information introduce the plants, wildlife and habitats found along the route.

Planning a visit

Waterford City & County Council’s greenway page brings together route information, project updates and links to local visitor resources. It provides a starting point for choosing a shorter ride or travelling between Waterford and Dungarvan.
