Vía Verde Vegas del Guadiana follows the imprint of an unfinished railway across Extremadura, from Villanueva de la Serena in Badajoz province to Logrosán in Cáceres. The landscape shifts from irrigated farmland and river crossings to dehesa pasture and the hills near Logrosán. A temporary bridge closure currently interrupts the route.

A railway through the Guadiana plains

The Caminos Naturales network describes a route opened in 2007 on the corridor of a railway intended to connect the area with Talavera de la Reina. Construction was abandoned at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. Former stations, cuttings and embankments still give the journey its railway character.

From Villanueva de la Serena the trail heads towards the Guadiana, crossing the river on a viaduct. It leaves the old railway alignment for a short stretch among fields and olive groves before returning near the former Rena station. The Fundación de los Ferrocarriles Españoles describes road crossings and sections shared with other vehicles, so the route is not entirely on a separate railway formation.

Rice fields, rivers and dehesa

Beyond the Guadiana, cultivated land and the rice fields around Palazuelo and Guadalperales introduce a landscape shaped by irrigation. The greenway passes old railway buildings and approaches Campo Lugar station before moving into holm oak dehesa near the River Ruecas.

Near Madrigalejo, pastures and seasonal ponds offer habitat for storks, cranes and other birds. Balsa de Hitos is an irrigation pond where the official trail guide describes wetland birds. Winter brings an opportunity to see cranes in the wider area; Spain’s tourism authority also notes several special bird protection areas along the route.

Towards Logrosán

Past Zorita-Lavadero station, the trail follows the Ruecas valley for a time before continuing near Grande creek. The railway landscape becomes more enclosed by oak pasture and, closer to Logrosán, changes again towards Mediterranean scrub and hills. The route ends at the town’s old station.

For a cultural stop, Spain’s tourism authority suggests the Castillo de la Encomienda and the Church of La Asunción in Villanueva de la Serena, or the Mina Constanza and its interpretation centre in Logrosán. The old Logrosán station is also the starting point of the separate Las Villuercas Nature Trail.

Plan around the Gargáligas closure

Caminos Naturales warns that the walkway over the River Gargáligas is temporarily closed following extreme weather in Extremadura in 2026. Access to the walkway is forbidden while the closure remains in force. The crossing lies beyond the former Rena station on the Villanueva side of the itinerary, so do not assume that a continuous end-to-end ride is possible.

Choose a section on either side of the interruption and consult the official route page for the latest warning before travelling. The route description also identifies a road crossing near the Villanueva end and shared-vehicle sections, details to bear in mind when planning a ride with children.
