Vía Verde de la Sierra follows the course of a railway that was planned between Jerez and Almargen but never carried a train. The 36.5 km itinerary links Puerto Serrano and Olvera through river valleys, farmland and the foothills of southern Andalusia. The Fundación Vía Verde de la Sierra manages the route, which is shared by cyclists, walkers and horse riders. Some sections remain subject to closures following storms in 2026.

From Puerto Serrano to Coripe

The foundation describes the route from the former Puerto Serrano station, around two kilometres from the town. Tunnels and viaducts carry the old railway alignment above the Guadalete valley. At Junta de los Ríos, the Guadalporcún joins the Guadalete and the La Toleta recreation area offers a place to pause.

Beyond the Gillete viaduct, the route approaches the Castillo tunnel and Coripe station, one of the foundation’s recommended access points. Nearby stands the Chaparro de la Vega, an old holm oak protected as a natural monument, with a rest area in its surroundings.

Zaframagón and the way to Olvera

The former Zaframagón station has been adapted as an interpretation centre and bird observatory. Its camera offers a closer view of the griffon vultures associated with the Peñón de Zaframagón nature reserve. The nearby viaduct overlooks the rock and the Guadalporcún gorge known as El Estrechón.

Towards Olvera, the railway course continues among tunnels, rural properties and olive groves. Navalagrulla station has a recreation area, while the former Olvera station has been restored for visitor use. An interpretation centre beside the station introduces the greenway and its surroundings.

Choosing a ride

The published itinerary has asphalt and compacted earth surfaces. Its railway structures include viaducts and tunnels, with the longer tunnels described by the foundation as lit. The greenway is also used on foot and horseback; motor vehicles are prohibited except for authorised users such as maintenance staff and neighbouring landowners.

Plan around the closures before treating the full distance as a through ride. The Spanish Railways Foundation’s notice of 21 July 2026 says that tunnels 14, Zamarra, and 15, Alberquilla, in Coripe remain closed, as does the section from Colada de Morón to the Olvera tunnel. Check the route information again before travelling and follow signs on site.

The route foundation lists restored stations at Puerto Serrano, Coripe and Olvera as places for food and accommodation, and identifies bicycle hire at the three stations. Service hours can differ, so check directly when arranging a stop or rental.
