Vélocéan brings together Atlantic beaches, salt-marsh landscapes and port towns on France’s western coast. France Vélo Tourisme describes the itinerary between Saint-Nazaire and Pénestin as part of the wider V45 project, La Littorale. Its suggested stages make it possible to explore a section at a time, with a separate excursion towards Le Croisic.

From the Vilaine estuary to Guérande

At the northern end, France Vélo Tourisme’s suggested journey starts around Pénestin and the mouth of the Vilaine. Pointe du Bile and the sheltered sweep of Pont-Mahé bay are places to pause before continuing towards Saint-Molf.

Between Saint-Molf and Quimiac, the itinerary passes a succession of tidal channels. Pointe de Merquel is a coastal stop, while diversions lead to Piriac-sur-Mer and the port of La Turballe. Further on, Guérande offers a change of scene with its medieval walled centre and nearby salt marshes.

La Baule, Le Croisic and Saint-Nazaire

South of Guérande, the suggested route heads towards La Baule via a greenway and the Escoublac forest. The long beach and bay give the journey a seaside character distinct from the salt marshes inland.

France Vélo Tourisme also presents an excursion from the La Baule area towards Le Croisic. It passes through Batz-sur-Mer and around the peninsula, with a return via Le Pouliguen. Allow time for this alternative when choosing how much of the coast to explore.

Towards Saint-Nazaire, the itinerary passes the Dissignac tumulus and Bois Joalland pond before reaching a more urban setting. Saint-Nazaire Agglomération Tourisme highlights the port, seafront and Parc Paysager as places to see in the town.

Choosing a direction and preparing

Vélocéan is signposted in both directions. France Vélo Tourisme notes that much of its itinerary uses small roads and advises particular care when coastal traffic is heavier in summer. Loire-Atlantique Tourisme also cautions families that some stretches use paths or roads shared with cars.

The terrain is generally flat, but wind can affect a day’s ride. Check its strength and direction before deciding which way to travel. The northern section between Pénestin and La Baule is not served by trains, so consider access and the return journey when selecting a section.

Loire-Atlantique Tourisme also describes a southern Vélocéan section beyond the Loire estuary, where the route overlaps La Vélodyssée. If combining the two sides, plan the estuary crossing separately: the Loire-Atlantique department advises against cycling over the Saint-Nazaire bridge because of wind and heavy road traffic. Check current crossing arrangements before travelling.
