Utvandrarleden, the Emigrant Trail, takes cyclists through the Småland countryside associated with author Vilhelm Moberg and his novels about Swedish emigration. The circular route links small communities, historic places and rural landscapes across the municipalities of Emmaboda, Lessebo and Tingsryd.
A circuit through Småland
Utvandrarleden is a circular journey rather than a ride with a compulsory starting town. Naturkartan’s cycling description says the route passes through central Emmaboda, making the town one possible place to begin or finish. Elsewhere, the ride connects rural communities and historic sites in the area known as the Kingdom of Glass.
Expect gravel roads and smaller asphalt roads, with forest and countryside between settlements. The cycle route and the similarly named walking trail are distinct, although both visit places connected with the emigrant story. Sweden by Bike describes red signs for cyclists and orange markings for the walking trail, so pay attention to the route you are following.
Moberg’s landscape and the emigrant story
The journey gains much of its character from the places associated with Vilhelm Moberg’s emigrant novels. Visit Småland identifies Moshultamåla’s old school, Åkerby crossroads and Ljuders church among the places to visit. The route also passes Skrufs glassworks, connecting the literary theme with the region’s glassmaking heritage.
Sweden by Bike highlights Korrö’s historic craft village, the stone circle at Flåboda and the remains of Modala glassworks, where Moberg worked as a young man. At Påvemåla, a memorial stone marks the site of the soldier’s cottage where he grew up. These stops offer different ways to explore the landscape behind the novels.
Planning a ride
Visit Småland suggests choosing both your starting point and the distance you want to cover each day. You can ride the whole circuit or select a part of it, leaving time for historical stops or a swim: the tourism guide notes that the route passes small lakes with bathing opportunities.
Accommodation along the trail includes hostels, a farm hotel and campsites. The local Utvandrarleden project also offers trip-planning assistance, while Visit Småland describes packages combining accommodation and food. Naturkartan’s cycling listing links to the route project and mentions detailed historical route descriptions available from several participating accommodation providers.
The trail project is owned by a local economic association formed by accommodation providers. Its cycling page points independent visitors to the separate Naturkartan listings for cycling and walking.
