Traws Eryri links Machynlleth and Conwy on a multi-day off-road journey through North Wales. Developed by Cycling UK with funding and support from Natural Resources Wales, it explores less-visited parts of Eryri.
Estuary, forests and slate landscapes
The itinerary takes in the Mawddach Estuary, Coed y Brenin and Gwydir forests, and remnants of North Wales’s slate industry. Existing mountain-bike centres are connected by public rights of way and other tracks.
The project was developed over three years, with local riders, communities and landowners helping shape the connections through the landscape.
Distance and riding demands
The launch account describes 196 km and 4,424 m of ascent, making climbing a substantial part of the journey. Cycling UK estimated four to five days for competent riders using mountain or gravel bikes.
The route is intended for adventurous off-road touring. Local shops, pubs and tea rooms provide opportunities to resupply rather than carrying everything for the whole crossing.
Planning resources
