Trans Dinarica is a connected cycling network across eight Western Balkan countries: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Serbia. The project combines riding with national parks, heritage sites and smaller communities.
Main routes, alternatives and connectors
The navigation system distinguishes MAIN sections, shown in red, from blue secondary alternatives and green connectors. Alternatives can change the difficulty or introduce additional sights; connectors help reach larger cities, airports and transport stations.
The published network totals around 5,500 km across main, secondary and connector stages. These figures describe the combined network rather than one compulsory end-to-end itinerary.
Surfaces and bicycle choice
The route combines quieter asphalt roads, macadam and forest paths. Its overall statistics list 81% paved and 19% unpaved surfaces. The creators recommend gravel-style bicycles and also describe the network as suitable for e-bikes.
Culture and trip planning
Food, music, local history and less-visited villages are central to the project’s approach. Country pages, itinerary information and the navigation pack help riders select a journey. Official tour-operator listings provide options for organised travel and local support.
