The Numedal Route, or Numedalsruta, links Geilo with Larvik through the landscapes of eastern Norway. It forms part of National Cycle Route 5, moving from the mountains into a valley known for its stave churches, agricultural heritage and railway history. SvingOm describes the Geilo–Kongsberg section in detail; Visit Vestfold places the longer journey’s coastal end at Larvik.

From Geilo into the mountains

SvingOm’s itinerary begins in Geilo and heads towards Dagalifjell. It describes a steep climb to Kikut, followed by high mountain scenery beside Skurdalsfjorden and Holmevatnet. Its suggested journey includes a detour towards Pålsbufjorden before returning alongside the Numedalslågen towards Dagali.

Beyond Dagalifjell, the route description takes riders through Smådøldalen towards Rødberg. The landscape changes from open uplands to more wooded valley scenery. SvingOm also suggests a diversion to Uvdal stave church, offering a first encounter with the region’s medieval heritage.

Through the valley to Kongsberg

From Rødberg, SvingOm describes a section on county road 40 towards Norefjord, where traffic and vehicle speeds can be significant. Nore stave church is a cultural stop in this part of the valley. Between Norefjord and Veggli, the itinerary passes farmsteads and follows the fjord landscape alongside traces of the Numedal railway.

South of Veggli, the suggested ride continues on the eastern side of the Numedalslågen towards Rollag. Riders can consider a climb to Paradisgrenda or remain beside the river. Rollag stave church and the old railway environment add reasons to pause before continuing towards Lampeland and Kongsberg.

The journey towards the coast

Visit Vestfold describes the full Numedal Route as a Geilo–Larvik journey, with mountain scenery giving way to river valleys, farmland and coastal landscapes. Larvik provides a coastal reference point for the southern end of that longer ride.

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration places Larvik, Kongsberg and Geilo on the southern part of National Cycle Route 5, which continues beyond Geilo to Gol. Its national description then continues over Golsfjellet towards Beitostølen and Vinstra. Those northern extensions are useful context when connecting a Numedal trip to a longer journey.

Planning the ride

Choose the section and alignment carefully. SvingOm’s Geilo–Kongsberg suggestion includes detours via Pålsbufjorden and Paradisgrenda, plus an alternative to the signed route through Djupdal. It describes the county road through Djupdal as narrow and winding; its alternative over Kleiverud includes a tractor road that can be demanding with luggage.

SvingOm lists shops in several valley communities but warns of long stretches without food and drink sales. Carry enough supplies for the section you choose. The roads administration notes that national routes often share roads with motor traffic and that signage varies across the network. Check current conditions, tunnel restrictions and any bicycle transport arrangements before departure.
