The Slovenian Mountain Bike Route, known locally as Slovenska turnokolesarska pot or STKP, links contrasting parts of Slovenia in one long mountain biking circuit. Created by the Mountaineering Association of Slovenia, it connects mountain huts and checkpoints with landscapes ranging from the Alps to the Adriatic coast.
A circuit through Slovenia
The STKP is a single long-distance project rather than a collection of unrelated rides. Its course crosses Pohorje, the Karavanke, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and the Julian Alps, then continues through the Karst and Brkini towards the Adriatic. Inland, it reaches the Snežnik area, Kočevsko, Bela krajina and Dolenjska before passing through Kozjansko and the Slovenske gorice hills.
The route brings together natural landscapes and places connected with Slovenian mountain and industrial history. Slovenia Outdoor highlights the Slovenian Mountain Museum, the Juliana Alpine Botanical Garden and the Idrija and Mežica mining heritage among the points associated with the journey. Riders can choose a section that matches their interests rather than attempting the entire circuit in one trip.
Riding character
Expect a mountain bike journey on a mixture of quiet side roads, field tracks, forest routes and paths. Slovenia Outdoor describes the basic route as generally accessible to a broad range of mountain bikers, while noting that some stretches require pushing the bike. The overall circuit is a substantial endurance undertaking because of its length and accumulated climbing.
The association’s online guide describes the route as long and strenuous. Its section descriptions are useful when deciding how much riding to include in a day: the character of a local excursion and the demands of completing the whole circuit are different.
Kozjansko and Koroška
For a section in eastern Slovenia, Kozjansko Regional Park describes the route from central Brežice via Pečice to Podsreda Castle, then over Vetrnik towards the Bohor Mountain Hut. The park’s account makes Brežice a useful place to locate the route without implying that the whole circuit must start there.
Farther north, the Koroška section links Pohorje and Košenjak with Uršlja Gora, Mežica and Peca before continuing towards the Logar Valley. Regional checkpoints include mountain huts and the Mežica Museum, giving this part of the circuit a mixture of mountain scenery and local heritage.
Planning with the official guide
The Mountaineering Association of Slovenia’s mountain biking commission publishes an online guide with stage descriptions and navigation information. Its STKP diary provides a way to collect stamps at checkpoints; huts are among the places connected by the route.
Study the relevant sections before setting out and plan around the demanding terrain. The national tourism board notes that some riders complete the circuit over several seasons. Individual hut services and route conditions should be checked for the dates and sections you intend to ride.
