The Saimaa Archipelago Route explores the southern reaches of Finland’s Lake Saimaa, connecting Lappeenranta and Imatra with islands, countryside and lakeside communities. Saimaa Cycling presents the journey as a chance to combine cycling with cultural stops, geological landscapes and time beside the water.
Lappeenranta, Imatra and the lake
Lappeenranta and Imatra are both suggested starting points by Saimaa Cycling. In Lappeenranta, the harbour and historic fortress make a useful introduction to the lakeside setting. The fortress area contains museums, cafés and Finland’s oldest Orthodox church.
In Imatra, the route reaches the Imatrankoski rapids and the surroundings of Kruununpuisto nature reserve. The castle-like Imatran Valtionhotelli adds another historic landmark to a city stop. Allow time for the towns as well as the riding: Saimaa Cycling suggests setting aside several days for the wider journey.
Islands, ridges and rural stops
Between Ruokolahti and Utula, the Äitsaari scenic road brings riders into the lake landscape. Huuhanranta, a sandy beach beside the road, offers a place to pause by the water. On Kyläniemi, Rastinniemi is an excursion destination with shoreline on both sides of the peninsula and shelters for a break.
The landscape also tells a geological story. Visit Finland’s description highlights the Salpausselkä formations between Imatra and Lappeenranta and around Kyläniemi and Utula. Around Savitaipale, Saimaa Cycling describes a rural stretch with paved and gravel roads and the historic Kärnäkoski fortress area near Partakoski.
Planning around the ferries
Water crossings are part of the route’s character and should shape the itinerary. The m/s Rasti bike ferry connects Sarviniemi and Kyläniemi; Saimaa Cycling also describes a mainland alternative through Syyspohja. The Utula ferry connects Utula and Äitsaari and offers another way to explore the countryside.
Check the operating days and timetables for the crossings before settling on daily plans. Saimaa Cycling says bike-ferry tickets must be bought in advance, while the Utula crossing requires advance booking. Its ferry guide also describes a Kyläniemi cable ferry that carries cyclists alongside vehicles, with cyclists boarding after larger vehicles.
A separate Rasti connection between Sarviniemi and Lintusalo links the area to the neighbouring Puumala route. Treat that as an optional extension and check its sailing details separately. Route descriptions give different distances for the Saimaa itinerary, so use the current route information and chosen crossings to plan your own journey.
