Switzerland’s Rhone Route, national route 1, connects the Alpine setting of Andermatt with the Rhône valley and Lake Geneva. Valais towns, vineyards and lakeside promenades mark the transition from mountain pass to Geneva.

The Alpine opening and Valais

The first stage crosses the Furka Pass from Andermatt towards Oberwald. Switzerland Tourism suggests starting at Oberwald for riders seeking to avoid this demanding opening.

The valley itinerary continues through Brig, Sierre and Martigny towards Montreux. Highlights include Brig’s Stockalper Palace, Pfyn-Finges nature park, the wine village of Salgesch and Sion’s castles.

Along Lake Geneva

Beyond Montreux, the route follows the lake towards Morges and Geneva, passing the terraced Lavaux vineyards. The official stage list also includes a final continuation from Geneva to Bois de Chancy.

Distances, surfaces and planning

The tourism portal lists 350 km, 3,500 m of ascent and 4,500 m of descent, with 323 km on asphalt and 27 km on natural surfaces. It presents eight stages and signposting in both directions.
