Rallarvegen follows the historic Bergen Railway construction road from Haugastøl to Flåm via Finse and Hallingskeid. The approximately 80 km journey crosses the edge of Hardangervidda before descending towards the fjord.
From plateau to Flåm
The four described stages are Haugastøl–Finse, 26 km; Finse–Hallingskeid, 19 km; Hallingskeid–Vatnahalsen, 17 km; and Vatnahalsen–Flåm, 16 km. Myrdal station is a short detour near Vatnahalsen.
Railway keepers’ houses, historic bridges and old stonework recall the road’s construction role. Finse offers the Rallar Museum, while the final descent passes tight bends and the Flåm Valley’s waterfalls.
Season and mountain conditions
The route is typically rideable from July to late September. Snow can remain between Finse and Hallingskeid early in the season, and the operator may recommend taking the train for that section. Check the current route report before travelling.
Riding character
This is a historic mountain gravel road with technical, steep and largely unsecured sections, especially towards Flåm. Ride at a controlled touring pace and allow for walkers and other traffic. Services and mobile coverage are limited; bring windproof and waterproof layers for changing mountain weather.
