The Puumala Archipelago Route explores the islands, ridges and shores of Lake Saimaa in eastern Finland. Described by Saimaa Cycling, the approximately 60-kilometre route combines roads and bridges with a seasonal bicycle ferry between Lintusalo and Hurissalo. Puumala’s village centre and harbour provide a natural base for exploring the area.
From Puumala into the archipelago
A route brochure published by Visit Puumala describes a journey from the village centre across Puumalansalmi bridge and onto the archipelago roads towards Lintusalo. The Hätinvirta cable ferry forms part of this island-side journey. Niinisaari village and the shelter on Sakkimäki hill are places to pause along the way.
The setting changes between woodland, island roads and open views of Lake Saimaa. Visit Saimaa describes the route through the wider Saimaa Geopark landscape, where ridges and rock formations reveal traces of the Ice Age.
Across Lietvesi and back towards Puumala
The Norppa II bicycle ferry connects Lintusalo and Hurissalo, making the crossing an integral part of the circuit. On the Hurissalo side, Visit Puumala’s brochure points out the Rakokivet boulders as a possible diversion.
The return towards Puumala includes the Lietvesi scenic road and the beach at Pistohiekka. Sahanlahti is another stop along this side of the route, before the journey returns towards the village and its harbour.
Planning the ferry and your stops
Saimaa Cycling presents the route as an active day trip or a more leisurely journey over several days. Cafés, accommodation and lakeside breaks offer reasons to allow time beyond the riding itself.
The Norppa II is seasonal, so check current sailing dates, departures and ticket arrangements before fixing the itinerary. Visit Puumala recommends booking ferry tickets and accommodation in advance. Outside a suitable sailing, its route information suggests exploring sections of the archipelago using the Hätinvirta ferry.
For a longer journey, the Puumala route can be linked with the separate Saimaa Archipelago Route. Saimaa Cycling identifies the m/s Rasti connection between Lintusalo and Sarviniemi; check its current service separately when planning the extension.
