Parenzana follows the former Istrian railway through Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. ViaggiareSlow’s cycling itinerary runs approximately 118 km from Muggia near Trieste to Poreč, linking coast, hill villages and railway tunnels.
Coastal and inland sections
The first section runs from Muggia through Koper, Izola and Portorož towards Sečovlje’s salt pans. A detour allows a visit to Piran.
The Croatian portion turns inland through vineyards and hills, with Buje, Grožnjan, Livade and Motovun among the main references. The final approach returns towards the sea at Poreč.
Surfaces and time on the route
The Muggia–Portorož section is mostly asphalt, while gravel predominates farther into Croatia and can be stony. Nine old railway tunnels add to the route’s character.
The guide recommends two or three days for time to stop in villages. Its 118 km itinerary excludes some urban connections included in the historic railway’s approximately 123 km length.
