Ölandsleden offers a way to explore the Swedish island of Öland by bicycle, from sandy northern beaches to the open agricultural landscape of the south. The route is presented in the Öland and Mörbylånga municipality guides on Naturkartan; riders can take on the whole itinerary or select sections around their interests.
An island-wide ride
Naturkartan lists Ölandsleden at 367.9 kilometres and describes a route that can be ridden as a substantial whole or broken into shorter outings. Its island setting brings together sea views, beaches, windmills and places to pause for a picnic.
The route extends through both Borgholm and Mörbylånga municipalities. Borgholm is a useful reference point for the island journey, with its castle among the places highlighted by Sweden by Bike. Its route guide also draws attention to the long sandy beach at Bödabukten in the north.
Landscape and places to explore
On southern Öland, the route crosses Stora Alvaret, part of a World Heritage agricultural landscape shaped by a long history of farming. Sweden by Bike describes its distinctive open character and rich plant and animal life. Ottenby is among the birdwatching places highlighted in its route guide.
The same guide points to Eketorp fortress, Himmelsberga and Sandvik’s windmill as possible places to explore. These make it possible to shape a ride around cultural stops as well as the coast. Öland’s tourism organisation recommends allowing time for breaks at farm shops and cafés, and asks visitors to treat the island’s fragile natural areas with care.
Signs, surfaces and trip planning
Most of the route follows asphalt roads, with some gravel, according to Naturkartan. Look for the yellow Ölandsleden signs with logos at the bottom: older signs may still be present along the way. Sweden by Bike notes that the itinerary occasionally follows a busy road and that traffic can increase in peak season, particularly near larger towns.
Choose sections to suit the time available and check your bicycle before leaving. Öland’s tourism organisation recommends carrying repair essentials and clothing for changing weather. Its cycling page also lists local bicycle hire and a public pump in Societetsparken in Borgholm. Consult the route resources and local providers when arranging a particular trip.
