Mazurska Pętla Rowerowa, the Masurian Cycling Loop, brings together lakeside towns and countryside around the Great Masurian Lakes. Managed by Stowarzyszenie Wielkie Jeziora Mazurskie 2020 with local partners, it offers a way to explore the region in sections, with opportunities to stop beside the water, visit towns and discover its natural landscapes.

A loop through the lake district

Mazury Travel describes the itinerary in three broad parts. The western side runs from Węgorzewo through Ryn and Mrągowo to Mikołajki. The southern side continues via Ruciane-Nida to Pisz, while the eastern side returns through Giżycko to Węgorzewo.

Węgorzewo is one useful reference point for planning: the regional guide describes the route beginning by the tourist information office on Bulwar Loir et Cher. Here the loop also meets the northern branch of Green Velo, making it possible to consider a longer journey beyond the lake district.

Lakes, forests and places to stop

The landscape changes around the loop. Much of the route crosses moraine hills, while its southern side passes through the Masurian Plain and Piska Forest. The regional tourism guide also points to the Mazurian Landscape Park and nature reserves including Sztynort, Jezioro Dobskie and Jezioro Nidzkie.

There is history alongside the natural scenery. The project association highlights Giżycko’s nineteenth-century Boyen Fortress and historic swing bridge, the amphitheatre in Mrągowo and the Pranie forester’s lodge among places of interest in the region. Allowing time for stops gives the journey a different rhythm from simply riding between towns.

What the riding is like

The association describes a varied route that includes gravel, separate asphalt paths, urban stretches and sandy or field tracks. The regional tourism office also notes differences in terrain and difficulty between sections. Check the character of the part you intend to ride when choosing a bicycle and planning your day.

Orange signs marked MPR identify the route. The project includes cyclist rest areas and viewing towers; the association lists locations such as Ruciane-Nida, Mikołajki, Mrągowo, Ryn and Giżycko. Its route page also points visitors to information about individual rest areas and towers.

Planning a visit

The loop can be divided into sections around the towns and sights that interest you. Mazury Travel recommends choosing stages that match the group’s preferences and abilities, and arranging accommodation and provisions before setting out.

The route continues to develop. In its 2026 project update, the association says construction has begun on improvements to existing sections and an alternative section, with work planned through December 2027. Consult its latest updates when preparing a trip, as the project description does not establish current conditions on every part of the loop.
