Marcher Castles Way is a demanding bikepacking loop from Shrewsbury through the Welsh Marches. Castles, hill forts and industrial heritage connect a journey across the historic borderlands of England and Wales.

Ironbridge, Ludlow and the Welsh border

The published route runs south through Ironbridge, climbs Brown Clee Hill towards Ludlow, then crosses the Kerry Ridgeway towards Newtown. A gentler section reaches Montgomery before the hills return.

The loop continues over the Long Mynd to Church Stretton and returns to Shrewsbury. Ironbridge Gorge, medieval towns and castle ruins provide reasons to allow time away from the bike.

Distance, terrain and equipment

The Cycle magazine fact file lists 290 km and recommends four days. Surfaces range from rocky bridleways and muddy forest roads to tarmac and towpaths. Steep climbs can require pushing.

The account recommends a hardtail mountain bike or a gravel bike with wide 650B tyres and low gearing. Its riders encountered sun, heavy rain, wind and low fog during their trip.

Planning the loop

Shrewsbury station provides the start and finish reference. Cycling UK links to the GPX file and route guide; use these to plan riding days and stops rather than following the scouting group’s shortened itinerary.
