The LF4 Midden-Nederlandroute crosses the Netherlands between Den Haag and Enschede. Nederland Fietsland describes a journey through changing landscapes, from the estates and pastures of the west to the woods, heathland and farmland of the east. The route can be approached from either end; this guide follows it from east to west.
Twente and the Achterhoek
From the Enschede end, the route passes through Twente before entering the Achterhoek. Nederland Fietsland highlights the area around Haaksbergen, including Buurserzand and the woods of Het Lankheet, as an introduction to the eastern landscape.
Farther west, the countryside between Borculo and Wichmond mixes woodland with cultivated land. Around Vorden, castles and avenues of oak and beech add another reason to pause. These contrasting stretches give the eastern part of the journey a different character from the open pasture country nearer Den Haag.
Across the IJssel and over the Veluwe
Near Bronkhorst, the LF4 crosses the IJssel. Between Brummen and Dieren it passes estates on the transition between the river valley and the Veluwe, then climbs into the southern Veluwe.
Expect changes in elevation here: Nederland Fietsland describes harder pedalling on the climb and views across extensive woodland and heath, including the area around the Posbank. At Doorwerth, the Veluwe drops towards the Rhine valley.
The river country and the Green Heart
Beyond Doorwerth, the route follows the Nederrijn past Amerongen and continues towards Utrecht along the edge of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The castle-lined Langbroeker Wetering and winding Kromme Rijn are features of this part of the journey.
Between Utrecht and Den Haag, the LF4 passes Kasteel De Haar and crosses the Green Heart. Old farms, meadows divided by wide ditches, the Oude Rijn and the plant nurseries around Boskoop shape the scenery. Near Den Haag, estates and parkland return to the picture.
Putting the ride together
Nederland Fietsland identifies the western endpoint at junction 30 by Den Haag Central Station and the eastern endpoint at junction 27 in Lonneker, Enschede. Its route page also lists places to eat and stay, offering a starting point for choosing stops along the way.
The LF network is being revised, so check the route manager’s current information before setting out. Its LF4 updates page records a low-water interruption to the Brummen–Bronkhorst ferry from 31 July 2026 and provides a diversion; check the latest ferry information before relying on that crossing. More generally, ferry schedules, temporary diversions and junction arrangements can affect a trip.
Nederland Fietsland lists the LF4 among its established routes and advises riders that signs on the ground take precedence if they differ from its navigation tracks. Report a missing or damaged route sign through the reporting service linked from the route page.
