LF Waterlinieroute connects Edam and Bergen op Zoom through Dutch landscapes shaped by water-based defence systems. Forts, fortified towns and inundation works give the journey its historical theme.

Three water-defence lines

The route follows the Stelling van Amsterdam, Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie and the West Brabant part of the Zuiderwaterlinie. The first two together form the UNESCO-listed Hollandse Waterlinies.

Canals, defensive embankments and batteries show how large areas could be flooded to obstruct an enemy. Forts and towns along the route make that history visible in the landscape.

Eight suggested stages

The stage sequence links Edam, Beverwijk, Uithoorn, Naarden, Utrecht, Leerdam, Geertruidenberg, Dinteloord and Bergen op Zoom. Suggested daily distances range from around 42 to 68 km.

Shorter LF weekend variants offer another way to explore the same theme, including routes focused on waterlines, forts and fortified towns.

Navigation and ferries

The full route is signposted in both directions. Nederland Fietsland provides GPX tracks, a guidebook and the free LF app, which includes sights, food stops and ferry times.

Ferries form part of the journey. Check current sailing schedules and route-change notices before setting out.
