La Verdoyante crosses the southern Calvados countryside between Saint-Sever-Calvados and Lisieux. France Vélo Tourisme presents the 200 km itinerary as a ride for experienced cyclists: expect hills, small roads and opportunities to explore Normandy’s towns, castles and food traditions.

From Saint-Sever to the bocage

The western end begins at Saint-Sever-Calvados, where the Pays de Vire tourist office highlights the abbey church and nearby state forest. The route continues beside Lac de la Dathée towards Vire, giving the opening part of the journey a mixture of woodland, water and hedged countryside.

Vire offers a chance to explore its historic centre, including the Porte Horloge, museum and remains of the medieval castle keep. It is also associated with andouille de Vire, a local sausage that features among the region’s food specialities.

Suisse Normande and the road to Falaise

Beyond Vire, La Verdoyante heads towards Suisse Normande and the Pays de Falaise. The local tourist office points to Vassy, Château de Pontécoulant and Condé-en-Normandie, where the Charles Léandre museum offers a cultural stop. Pont d’Ouilly, on the Orne, is one of the stage points in France Vélo Tourisme’s itinerary.

Falaise is associated with William the Conqueror and its castle. Further east, the section between Falaise and Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives offers a different landscape: Normandie Tourisme describes it as gently rolling and suggests visits to Château de Vendeuvre and its gardens or the Arpents du Soleil vineyard.

Through the Pays d’Auge to Lisieux

Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives is known for its medieval market hall. Continuing towards the Pays d’Auge, the itinerary includes Livarot and finishes at Lisieux. Calvados Attractivité highlights the cheese-making heritage of Livarot and the mosaics of the basilica at Lisieux among places to discover along the wider journey.

Orchards, villages and the region’s local produce add another dimension to the ride. Cider, calvados and cheeses such as livarot and camembert are among the specialities highlighted by France Vélo Tourisme.

Planning the ride

France Vélo Tourisme divides the route into five suggested sections, with stage points at Vire, Pont d’Ouilly, Falaise and Livarot. Its planning tool allows riders to choose the whole itinerary or a selection of stages. The organisation recommends starting in Saint-Sever-Calvados and travelling east because of the prevailing north-westerly winds.

The route is signposted and mostly follows small roads shared with motor traffic, with some cycle paths and greenways around Vire, Falaise, Livarot and Lisieux. Hills and shared roads make it best suited to adults comfortable cycling on roads; an electrically assisted bicycle may help with the terrain. Roads can be icy in the coldest months.

Vire has the nearest railway station to the western starting point, while Lisieux has a station at the eastern end. France Vélo Tourisme also identifies a station at Saint-Pierre-sur-Dives and warns that carrying bicycles on regional TER trains can be difficult during busy periods. Accueil Vélo accommodation can be found along the itinerary.
