La VéloWestNormandy connects the history of the Normandy landings with the landscapes of the bocage and the bay of Mont Saint-Michel. Normandie Tourisme presents the route as a bike-and-train journey, with a choice of departures from Bayeux or Carentan and optional rides to the historic beaches.

Two departures and the Landing Beaches

The route offers a choice between Bayeux and Carentan. Its three optional prologues introduce Gold, Omaha and Utah beaches, allowing riders to add a visit to the D-Day coast before travelling inland. The local Mont Saint-Michel tourist office describes the itinerary as a combination of country roads and greenways.

Bayeux is a useful place to spend time before setting off: France Vélo Tourisme highlights its medieval streets and the surrounding Bessin countryside. The alternative from Carentan brings the Cotentin marshes into the journey. The choices give the same overall trip different beginnings.

Through the bocage towards the bay

The inland journey offers more than a link between two famous destinations. Depending on the departure chosen, places associated with the itinerary include Saint-Lô, the Roches de Ham, the Souleuvre viaduct, Vire and the Mortain waterfalls. Allow time for the stops that interest you rather than treating them all as a single day's sightseeing.

In its suggested Bayeux journey, Normandie Tourisme describes the final stretch through Ducey and Pontaubault, following the Sélune towards the bay. Here the enclosed bocage gives way to salt marshes and views of Mont Saint-Michel. The same account identifies a shared section with La Vélomaritime and La Véloscénie.

Choosing your ride

France Vélo Tourisme says the itinerary is signposted in both directions. It describes the northern section as using small, low-traffic roads, while the section from Vire towards Mont Saint-Michel is largely on greenway. Its full itinerary is classified for riders with some experience; those seeking a more sheltered introduction can consider the southern section.

The route is designed around a bike-and-train concept. Bayeux and Carentan are the two stated departure options, and Pontorson station serves the Mont Saint-Michel end. Check the operator's current timetable and bicycle conditions for the particular train before arranging the return. Normandie Tourisme also lists cycle hire and repair contacts along its suggested journey.
