La Véloccitanie crosses a varied part of Occitanie between the Seuil de Naurouze and Béziers. It brings together canal landscapes, agricultural country, the former railway of the PassaPaïs greenway and Hérault’s vineyards. The route is coordinated by the Parc naturel régional du Haut-Languedoc.
From the canal to the Haut-Languedoc
The western end begins at the Seuil de Naurouze, near the Canal du Midi. From there the itinerary heads towards Revel through Lauragais country, with the Rigole de la Plaine forming part of the journey. Sorèze is one of the places to pause further along: the municipality says the route passes through town on a section of its greenway.
Sorèze’s historic centre, shops and workshops offer reasons to spend time off the bike. Near the centre and tourist information office, the municipality describes a sheltered bicycle parking box at the Berniquaut parking area.
The PassaPaïs crossing
Between Mazamet and Bédarieux, La Véloccitanie incorporates the PassaPaïs greenway. This former railway crosses the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park between its Tarn and Hérault sides. Its name evokes a passage between two landscapes: the park describes the western side as oceanic and the eastern side as Mediterranean.
The greenway is an appealing choice for a shorter trip. France Vélo Tourisme suggests the Mazamet–Bédarieux section for families trying a first cycling journey, while the park also identifies separate greenway sections around Revel and Sorèze. The complete itinerary includes shared roads as well as greenways, so its character differs from a ride confined to PassaPaïs.
Towards Béziers and the vineyards
Beyond Bédarieux, the route heads towards the vineyard plains of Hérault and Béziers. France Vélo Tourisme describes this final section as hillier, with significant gradients when leaving Bédarieux before the descent towards the plain.
The published route currently includes a provisional alternative between Puimisson and Béziers because the northern crossing of Béziers is still planned. That alternative connects Puimisson with the Canal du Midi, the Fonséranes locks and central Béziers. Check the route publisher’s latest description before setting out.
Planning the ride
France Vélo Tourisme classifies the complete route for riders with some experience. It describes a mix of greenways and small shared roads, so choose a section that suits the people in your group rather than assuming the whole journey has the same conditions.
The stretch from the Seuil de Naurouze to Lake Lenclas is not yet fully developed: the path is narrow and rooted, and the publisher advises against riding it in rain. Signposting from the Seuil to Revel is provisional: look for La Véloccitanie logos as far as Lake Lenclas, then signs for the Rigole de la Plaine greenway. From Revel to the Fonséranes locks, the publisher describes official La Véloccitanie signs.
For access, France Vélo Tourisme lists Avignonet-Lauragais and Castelnaudary stations near the western end and Béziers station at the eastern end. Check current train and bicycle arrangements separately when making reservations.
