Greenway Jizera follows the landscapes of the Jizera River from the mountains towards central Czechia. Coordinated by the Bohemian Paradise Association, the project combines marked cycle route 17 with a growing network of purpose-built paths and bridges. Turnov is a useful reference point for exploring its popular middle section.
From the mountains towards the lowlands
The Bohemian Paradise Association describes Greenway Jizera as a marked cycling journey through the Jizera Mountains, the western Krkonoše, Bohemian Paradise and the Elbe lowlands, with a connection towards Prague. Its landscapes change from uplands and wooded valleys to towns and lower-lying country.
In Liberec Region, the route passes places including Jizerka, Paseky nad Jizerou, Semily, Železný Brod, Malá Skála, Turnov and Svijany. The regional authority identifies it as cycle route 17; local alternatives have also been marked as 17A.
The Bohemian Paradise section
The stretch from Dolánky near Turnov through Malá Skála to Líšný is a well-used part of the greenway. A further section between Líšný and Železný Brod opened in 2025, allowing cyclists and walkers to continue towards Malá Skála and Turnov without using the busy I/10 road.
The association suggests cultural stops along the wider route, including Vranov rock castle, Svijany Castle and Mnichovo Hradiště Castle. The valleys, forests and rock formations of Bohemian Paradise give this part of the journey a distinctive setting.
What riding the route involves
Greenway Jizera is a cycling itinerary, rather than a single continuous segregated path. The association describes purpose-built cycle paths, quiet roads and unpaved tracks, with some climbs away from the river valley. In its description of the Liberec Region section, the regional authority also notes gravel and unpaved surfaces and difficult climbs around Paseky nad Jizerou.
Pick a section with those changes in mind. A riverside outing around Turnov and Malá Skála offers a different proposition from a ride through the uplands, and the route’s attractions make it possible to build in stops rather than focus solely on distance.
Planning around a developing project
The greenway has grown in stages through cooperation between the Bohemian Paradise Association, regional authorities and municipalities. Liberec Region’s project history records new paths and bridges in several towns, alongside sections that were under construction or in preparation in 2025.
Check local notices before setting out, especially around active works. In August 2026, Příšovice municipality announced construction of a section towards the Jizera riverbank and warned that temporary local restrictions could occur. The association’s route page provides a cycling guide and a link to a route map for further planning.
