The Grande Traversée du Massif Central à VTT, known as the GTMC, links Avallon in Burgundy with Agde on the Mediterranean. Its paths and trails cross a succession of distinctive landscapes, from the lakes and forests of the Morvan to the volcanic uplands of Auvergne and the limestone plateaus farther south. The French Cycling Federation identifies the Association Inter-Parcs Massif central as a contact for the route.
From Avallon into the Morvan
The northern end begins in Avallon, where riders can explore the historic centre before descending through terraced gardens into the Cousin valley. The route then heads south through fields divided by hedges towards Lac du Crescent, one of the Morvan’s great lakes.
Beyond Quarré-les-Tombes, the journey passes woodland, the Benedictine abbey of La Pierre qui Vire and Lac de Saint-Agnan. Farther on, the Morvan’s forests and hills lead towards Anost and La Grande-Verrière. France Vélo Tourisme also describes a connection to Autun for riders who want to visit its Roman heritage and cathedral.
Volcanoes, uplands and the Tarn
The landscape changes as the GTMC continues towards Auvergne and the volcanic parts of the Massif Central. Around Chalinargues, the main route descends towards Neussargues and crosses the Planèze to historic Saint-Flour. A separate Cantal variant goes via Murat and Le Lioran before returning towards the main itinerary.
In Lozère, the route approaches Mont Lozère and the upper Tarn before reaching Le Pont-de-Montvert. The following section visits Florac and passes through Ispagnac, Quézac and Sainte-Enimie, with several crossings of the Tarn. South of Sainte-Enimie, the ascent towards the Causse Méjean opens views across the plateau and towards the Aigoual massif.
Towards the Mediterranean
The southern part of the crossing brings riders through the Cévennes and the Grands Causses. Beyond Le Vigan, the landscape opens out on the Causse de Blandas, with the Cirque de Navacelles among the landmarks on the way.
Closer to the coast, the Cap d’Agde Méditerranée tourist office describes a final journey through vineyards, pine woods and garrigue. Around Caux, dry-stone structures add a local detail to the landscape; later, views towards the Mediterranean and the Étang de Thau signal the approach to the coast. Grande Conque beach at Cap d’Agde provides a memorable place to finish.
Planning a ride
The official GTMC planner lets riders select either the whole crossing or a trip between chosen stages. Its route page lists accommodation categories, including campsites, guesthouses and hotels, as well as bicycle rental and repair services. Use the stage descriptions to choose a section that fits your plans and check the details before setting out.
The French Cycling Federation describes the GTMC as suitable for mountain bikes and electrically assisted mountain bikes. A separate gravel itinerary also exists, so check that the route information you select is for the VTT version. France Vélo Tourisme describes the mountain bike route as waymarked from Avallon to Agde.
