Gotlandsleden explores the Swedish island of Gotland on a network of smaller roads and cycle paths. From Visby, the route opens up a journey through coastal scenery, rural settlements and historic landscapes, with northern and southern loops giving riders choices about how much of the island to explore.

An island route with choices

Gotlandsleden circles Gotland and includes Fårö and the southern peninsula of Storsudret. A connection across the middle of the island makes northern and southern loops possible. The Swedish Cycling Society, Svenska Cykelsällskapet, is behind the route project; its description calls the renewed itinerary Nya Gotlandsleden.

The Swedish Transport Administration describes the route as approximately 540 km in total, with Visby among the settlements included. That figure describes the wider signed network: the distance of an individual ride depends on the combination of roads and loops chosen. Red Gotlandsleden signs identify the route.

From northern shores to Storsudret

The northern reach extends towards Fårö, where the island's coastal scenery includes sandy beaches and raukar, the distinctive limestone sea stacks. Across Gotland, the route's surroundings also include rocky coasts, flowering meadows and windswept woodland.

In the south, Sweden by Bike describes open fields and winding country roads alongside traces of older settlements and medieval churches. Hoburgen is a prominent rock formation at the southern end. Farm shops and villages offer places to pause while exploring the island's rural character.

Road conditions and traffic

Expect a mixture of asphalt and gravel. Region Gotland's visitor guide describes Gotlandsleden as a signed route using smaller roads and cycle paths, but says only 16 km of the network is separated cycle path. Sweden by Bike notes that some sections use busy roads and that larger roads can carry more traffic in summer.

Region Gotland's regional cycling plan states that the Swedish Transport Administration has not approved Gotlandsleden as sufficiently safe in traffic. Assess the roads and the needs of everyone in your group when choosing a section; a signposted route should not be assumed to be traffic-free.

Putting a trip together

Visby is a useful reference point for an island trip and is connected by ferry with Nynäshamn and Oskarshamn on the Swedish mainland. The route passes through the city, so riders can combine time among its historic sights with a longer exploration of Gotland.

Decide whether to focus on one loop or connect a broader selection of sections. Region Gotland provides a Gotlandsleden PDF and a cycling map from its visitor guide, while Sweden by Bike presents northern and southern route information. Use these resources to plan stops around the landscapes and places you want to see.
