Glasblåsarleden, or the Glassblower’s Trail, explores the Kingdom of Glass in Småland. Presented by Sweden by Bike, the 250 km route connects a landscape of forests and lakes with the stories of the glassworks that shaped local communities.
Riding through the Kingdom of Glass
Sweden by Bike describes Glasblåsarleden as a 250 km route on asphalt and gravel, using roads with low traffic. Its landscape is closely tied to the glass industry: workshops provided employment and attracted artists, while settlements grew around the furnaces. Many glassworks have since closed, but their buildings and stories remain part of the region.
The route’s cultural setting includes names such as Kosta, Boda and Orrefors. Allow time to explore the places that interest you rather than treating the ride solely as a distance to cover. Visit Småland places the wider Kingdom of Glass across the municipalities of Emmaboda, Nybro, Uppvidinge and Lessebo.
Glass, design and local history
Sweden by Bike lists The Glass Factory among the route’s points of interest. The museum occupies the former Boda glassworks setting and brings historical glass together with contemporary creative work. Destination Glasriket describes exhibitions and demonstrations in the hot shop, as well as opportunities for visitors to try working with glass.
Other places highlighted near the route illustrate different chapters of the craft. Nybro Glasbruk began production in 1935 and developed hand-painted glass techniques. At Pukeberg, several businesses share historic glassworks buildings, including a small-scale glassworks with a neighbouring shop.
Orrefors helped establish Swedish glass internationally in the twentieth century; Sweden by Bike points to the 1925 Paris exhibition and designs by Simon Gate and Edward Hald. Åfors, beside the Lyckebyån rapids, is a former glassworks associated with designers Bertil Vallien and Ulrica Hydman-Vallien.
Planning your ride
The route is not signposted, so settle your navigation arrangements before departure. Sweden by Bike provides route information and describes using its app for a ride. Its classification is beginner, but the full itinerary is a substantial distance; choose the amount of riding and sightseeing that suits your trip.
Emmaboda station is a travel option identified by Sweden by Bike. The publisher also identifies Utvandrarleden as a connecting cycling route, useful if you want to investigate a longer journey through the area.
Check the current opening arrangements of individual glassworks and museums before building a day around a visit. Their programmes can differ: The Glass Factory, for example, combines exhibitions with events and demonstrations in its hot shop.
