Gallovidian Gravel explores Galloway in south-west Scotland on a loop from Dumfries. Cycling UK’s route combines forest tracks, byways and quiet lanes with coast, lochs and mountain valleys.
From Dumfries to Galloway Forest Park
The published fact file describes approximately 330 km and 3,900 m of climbing. Dumfries provides the main starting reference, with access by rail from Carlisle.
The scouting ride passes Mabie Forest, coastal villages and Kirroughtree before reaching the more remote terrain of Galloway Forest Park. Woodland, reservoirs and industrial remains give way to rolling countryside on the return towards Dumfries.
Gravel riding and resupply
The route was developed for gravel and adventure touring bikes, with longer, steadier climbs. The scouting riders used gravel bikes and an e-MTB hardtail; the account recommends wider tyres for comfort on stony sections and when carrying luggage.
Villages, cafés and accommodation break up the journey, while some forest sections can feel remote. Weather on the scouting trip ranged from wind and rain to still sunshine.
Navigation and planning
Cycling UK links to route mapping, GPX and a dedicated guidebook. Ordnance Survey Explorer sheets 312, 313, 318, 319 and 320 cover the route.
