The Coastal Route, or Kustroute, follows the Belgian coast through a changing landscape of beaches, dunes, woods and polders. Part of Flanders’ iconic cycle route collection, it brings together seaside towns, nature and the history of coastal life. It connects with longer routes in the Netherlands and France.

Along the Flemish coast

The Kustroute is one of the themed itineraries presented by Icoonfietsroutes. Its coastal setting combines stretches beside the beach and views of the sea with dunes, woodland and the open polder landscape. Tidal flats and salt marshes add another dimension to the scenery.

Knokke-Heist provides a reference point at the eastern side of the coast, while De Panne lies towards the French border. Seaside towns and resorts give riders opportunities to break up the journey and explore the coast’s maritime history and local culture.

Nature, towns and coastal heritage

The appeal of the route is the variety between its natural and built surroundings. The official route description points to dune landscapes, forests and broad polders, as well as the stories of people who have lived and worked along the coast.

Coastal heritage also includes Belle Époque architecture and the Beaufort sculpture park. Allow time for stops in the resorts as well as for the landscape: this is a trip that can be shaped around the places a rider wants to explore.

Choosing a direction and planning a longer ride

The Flemish iconic routes are signposted in both directions, so riders can choose where to begin and which way to travel. Consider the forecast and the coastal wind when deciding on a direction, and choose stops to suit the time available.

The Kustroute forms part of the Flemish alignment of EuroVelo 4 and EuroVelo 12. It also connects with the Dutch LF Kustroute and La Vélomaritime in France, making a cross-border extension possible. The Dutch route is a separate itinerary, despite the similar name.

The Flemish cycling network and its iconic routes were updated in 2026. Consult the current Icoonfietsroutes route information when planning: older guides may show a different alignment.
