Altmühltal-Radweg connects Rothenburg ob der Tauber with Kelheim through historic towns and the Altmühl valley. The itinerary links Franconian countryside with lakes, castles and the landscapes of the Altmühltal Nature Park.

From Rothenburg to Kelheim

The Rothenburg tourism guide describes the route through Windelsbach, Colmberg and Leutershausen to Gunzenhausen. It then continues through Treuchtlingen, Eichstätt, Beilngries and Riedenburg towards Kelheim.

Stops highlighted by the guide include medieval Colmberg, Altmühlsee’s bird island, Treuchtlingen’s castle, Solnhofen’s stone heritage, Eichstätt’s Residenzplatz, Kipfenberg Castle and Riedenburg’s three-castle setting.

Surfaces and climbing

The itinerary is partly asphalted and follows quieter roads and paths. It is signposted in both directions, with more demanding climbs in the Frankenhöhe area. The tourism service describes it as suitable for families, with stage choice allowing for those hillier sections.
